GaryElvis placed 3rd in the Images of the King preliminary competition, which was held in Branson, MO October 31 to November 2.
GaryElvis placed 3rd in the Images of the King preliminary competition, which was held in Daytona Beach, FL October 24.
Lady Luck Music held their 8th annual invitational International Performers Showcase October 3 and 4 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the LaSalle Legion.
The following ten talented Elvis tribute artists performed each night: GaryElvis Britt (Plant City, FL), Carl Brandon (Quebec City, QC), Shon Carroll (Kitchener, ON), Jon Cigan (Pickering, ON), TJ Clementi (Lake Mills, WI), Lance Dobinson (Collingwood, ON), Elvis Gauthier (Montreal, QC), Michael O'Connor (Philadelphia, PA), Larry Tschekalin (Sudbury, ON) and Dany Vincent (Three Rivers, QC). Matt Nardi, a young ETA, also performed a 50s set on Friday night. Five ETAs completed their main performance each night, and the other five sang a few songs after the main performances. This provided an excellent opportunity for the audience each night to see all ten performers.
GaryElvis thrilled Friday night's audience dressed in his Blue Fringe jumpsuit. His set list included "C.C. Rider," "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Hurt," "Way Down," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "It's Midnight," "You'll Never Walk Alone." He wrapped up the set with his wonderful signature song "Just Pretend." Without any competitive pressure whatsoever, he appeared to be very relaxed and to be having a very good time.
Saturday evening GaryElvis entertained the crowd dressed in his Purple Owl jumpsuit. When he appeared onstage, the excitement in the audience was obvious. He sang "It's Now or Never," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." GaryElvis presented a special recognition plaque to Charmaine Jensen-Voisine for her assistance starting his Love Me Tender Charity Project. We were pleased Charmaine was able to make the trip all the way from Ajax, Ontario to attend the Montreal Showcase. Moira was excited to finally meet Charmaine and it had been quite a while since GaryElvis had seen her. Many thanks to Joanna and her team of volunteers who worked hard to make the showcase an enjoyable weekend.
GaryElvis was very happy to return for the third time in Joanna's Lady Luck Music Showcase. Many friends were reacquainted and it was great to spend time with everyone there, especially Patsy and Danny Parker, who treated GaryElvis to a homemade dinner Thursday night when he arrived. Also, Danny Parker is Lady Luck Music's regular videographer. Both he and Mike Hall from Ontario did a spectacular job filming the event.
GaryElvis placed 4th in the Elvistival competition, which was held in Dewey Beach, DE September 19 & 20.
This being the 31st Anniversary year, Elvis Week 2008 in Memphis, Tennessee was much quieter than last year, one of the five-year anniversaries that draws a much larger crowd to Elvis's hometown.
Images of the King:GaryElvis was one of thirteen ETAs chosen to perform Friday in the first of two Final rounds. He wowed the crowd when he sang a rockin' rendition of a song many associate with him possibly because he does it so well, "Way Down." He followed that with "You Gave Me a Mountain," "My Way" and "How Great Thou Art." He looked stunning in his white with turquoise Phoenix jumpsuit, and the ladies were lining the stage five and six deep hoping to be lucky enough to receive a scarf.
Throughout the Images of the King Contest, GaryElvis greeted long-time fans and met many new, enthusiastic admirers. He was most gracious about signing programs when asked, was available for photos and had merchandise available for sale.
The Images of the King winners were announced Saturday night and were as follows: 1st place—-Gino Monopoli (Toronto, ON), 2nd place—-Jim Barone (NJ) and 3rd place—-Todd C. Martin (LA). Tony Whitt was awarded the People's Choice Award, and the Spirit of Elvis Award was awarded to Steve Roberti.
The Images of the King Breakfast of Champions was held Sunday morning at the Holiday Inn Select. As always, this is a wonderful way to wrap up Elvis Week! It provides fans an opportunity to hear this year's Images of the King winner as well as winners from years past and to say goodbye to friends. As the Spirit of Elvis winner for 2002, GaryElvis was once again honored to give the invocation and prayer for the special gathering. Later in the program, he sang the beautiful song "You'll Never Walk Alone." GaryElvis and all the past Images of the King world champions present at the breakfast gathered to sing "Peace in the Valley," "Amazing Grace" and "Bosom of Abraham."
EP Memorial Dinner:
We attended Marian Cocke's Elvis Presley Memorial Dinner, which was held Thursday, August 14 at the Peabody Hotel. Dinner was
followed by a memorial candlelight ceremony and entertainment. The Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham, Elvis's original backup singers,
delighted the crowd with their wonderful voices. GaryElvis was one of several ETAs who had the opportunity to perform that evening
with the Jordanaires. Elvis was notorious for his generosity to various charities. Marian, who was Elvis's nurse, continues his
legacy by donating proceeds from the EP Memorial Dinner and auction to charities. It's wonderful to see that many of Elvis's friends
and fellow performers attend the dinner.
Elvis Week (continued)
GaryElvis attended a Sunday evening worship service and a very tasty potluck supper at the Crockett Church of Christ in Senatobia,
MS with Bobby and Georgia Stewart and Mack and Mary Sue Gurley. GaryElvis took a turn leading the congregation in song. Back in Memphis
in the 50's and 60's, Bobby and Mack had been close, personal friends of Elvis’. After dinner, the Stewart home was the setting for
storytelling and an awesome jam session!
GaryElvis stopped at one of our favorite spots, The Kettle, Monday morning to say goodbye and for a few quick pictures with our friends Bunny, Camille and Rhoda (a.k.a. the NJ gals).
GaryElvis was host and emcee for the Windsor Elvis Fest June 27, 28 and 29 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This was an EPE-sanctioned Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist preliminary competition.
An open mic session in Dieppe Park Friday afternoon kicked off the Windsor Elvis Fest weekend. To say that it rained quite a bit over the weekend is an understatement, but in spite of the rain ETAs and fans had a great time! The city of Windsor is a beautiful city just across the Detroit River from Detroit, Michigan. The city has many great restaurants and the people never fail to make visitors feel welcome. The Centres for Seniors Executive Director, Ellen Hope, and her team of volunteers once again ran a top-notch festival.
Friday night's Showcase of Kings featured winning Elvis Tribute Artists from the 2007 Windsor and Collingwood Elvis festivals. The event took place at the beautiful Chrysler Theatre in downtown Windsor. Danny Granger, John Cigan, Chris Ayotte, Pete Paquette, Jay Zanier and Doug MacKenzie (as Roy Orbison) performed and were backed by the ExSpence Account Showband. GaryElvis was an excellent host and emcee for the evening, singing "Heartbreak Hotel," "And I Love You So," and leading the evening's performers into "My Way," the finale. He also told his much-anticipated duck joke.
The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest preliminary competition qualifying rounds for all divisions and the youth competition was held Saturday during the day at Dieppe Park. GaryElvis made an appearance dressed in his Blue Fringe jumpsuit and entertained the crowd with "Way Down." Afterwards, he posed for pictures and signed autographs.
On Saturday evening, "A Tribute to Elvis '68 Comeback Special" starring Stephen Kabakos with the ExSpence Account Showband was held at The Chrysler Theater. The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest preliminary competition semifinal round for the pro division followed. Again, GaryElvis was a terrific emcee for the evening. He sang Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison" and later sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water." His imponderable jokes went over well with the audience.
The GaryElvis Gospel Show was held at Dieppe Park Sunday morning. GaryElvis' novel idea to have Fourteen ETAs make up the GaryElvis Windsor Gospel Choir, worked well to entertain the crowd with Elvis's gospel music. GaryElvis wishes to give his heart-felt thanks to all of the guys who graciously donated their time and efforts: Pete Paquette, Stephen Kabakos, Randy Love, Wayne Curtis, Danny Granger, Doug McKenzie, Jeff Marsh, Kevin Bezaire, John Cigan, Rick Duin, Jay Zanier, Chris Ayotte and Lance Dobinson. The Gospel portion went over so well that Richard Rosenthal hastily asked GaryElvis to quickly coordinate another 60 minutes of non-Gospel songs with the boys, which he gladly did and the show went on to a very appreciative crowd.
The youth division competition final round and the Ultimate Elvis preliminary competition finals were held Sunday evening at The Chrysler Theatre. All performers were backed by the ExSpence Account Showband. GaryElvis invited Jamie Aaron Kelley, performer extraordinaire, to join him on stage, and they got the audience singing "Teddy Bear." Later in the show, GaryElvis debuted his new original song, "Let the Candle Burn," which went over very well judging by the impressive audience applause.

On Sunday evening, we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends Sandy and Richard Rosenthal, Chris and Julie Ayotte, and Michael O'Connor. What a fun, relaxing and laughter-filled way to wrap up our Windsor Elvis Fest weekend! We're already looking forward to Windsor Elvis Fest 2009!
The Lake George Elvis Festival was held May 29 through June 1 in Lake George, New York. Lake George is in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains area of New York. The morning of May 29, GaryElvis, Michael O’Connor and Moira enjoyed breakfast at Maude’s Kitchen, a wonderful, quaint restaurant in Glens Falls, New York that bears mentioning. If you’re ever in Glens Falls, be sure to visit Maude’s. You will not be disappointed!
GaryElvis performed Saturday afternoon for the festival semifinals wearing his white with turquoise Phoenix jumpsuit, a replica of a jumpsuit that Elvis wore in concerts in 1972 and 1973. He sang Johnny Be Good followed by his signature song, Just Pretend.
GaryElvis performed two of his own shows in downtown Lake George at The Adirondack Pub and Brewery to a packed house. For his afternoon show, he wore the Purple Owl jumpsuit that so many of his fans adore. For his 2-hour evening show he wore the Blue Fringe jumpsuit. Both shows went over well with the audience, with fans clamoring for photographs with GaryElvis between song sets and after the show.
Friday night’s “40 Year Comeback” show at the Lake George Forum featured Dwight Icenhower, Irv Cass and Robert Washington.
Saturday night’s “Aloha from Lake George” show at the Lake George Forum featured Shawn Klush, winner of the EPE Ultimate Elvis competition in August 2007, and Donny Edwards. Backing Shawn and Donny was the Change of Habit Tribute Band from Chicago, Illinois. GaryElvis was present after the show and was happy to fulfill requests for friends and fans who wanted their pictures taken with him.
Saturday evening’s after-party was held at a lakeside bar, where GaryElvis entertained with many other ETAs. The dance floor was packed with an excited audience, who appeared to enjoy each consecutive song even more than the one before it!

The Mohican began sailing on Lake George in the spring of 1908. GaryElvis performed and graciously helped organize all the music for the performing Elvis tribute artists. The ship was packed with ETAs and fans! It was a rockin’ good time!
Be sure to check GaryElvis’ website Photos page or his Yahoo GaryElvis Official Fan Club website for pictures from these events.
GaryElvis placed 2nd in the "Memories of Elvis" competition, which was held in West Monroe, LA March 15.
GaryElvis was among six Elvis tribute performers who sang at a Valentine’s Day party for children and their families at the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa on February 14. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed the heart-shaped stickers he handed out, which had “GaryElvis Loves You” and his photo on them. We also added heart necklaces and bottles of bubbles to gift bags for the children. After singing and spending time with the children and their families, GaryElvis fulfilled a special request to visit Robyn, a beautiful 13-year-old girl, in her room to sing for her and her family, since she was not able to attend the party.
The Elvis Extravaganza Impersonator Contest National Finals & Fan Convention was held at the Florida State Fair February 15 through 17 in Tampa, Florida. The event was designated as one of GaryElvis’ “Love Me Tender Day Charity Project” Countdown Partner Shows. Fair attendees brought bears and non-perishable food that was collected and will be presented to local needy families and hospitalized children in the Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida area. GaryElvis thanks Eric and Cherie Ericsson for their concern and help with the collected stuffed toys and food items. And a big thank you goes out to those great Elvis fans like Vickie Leopard who went out of their way to contribute to the Love Me Tender Day Charity Project!
GaryElvis and other Elvis tribute performers sang at special karaoke events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. These were held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
Chris Noel, who starred with Elvis in the movie “Girl Happy”, was present for the Elvis Extravaganza to tell about her memories of Elvis, for photo opportunities and to sign photos.
Elvis Extravaganza Contest open rounds were held on Saturday at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Another contest open round was held Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by Final rounds at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. All rounds were held in the 5,000-seat Sweetbay Entertainment Hall on the grounds of the Florida State Fair.
Prior to the start of the first round of competition Saturday afternoon, GaryElvis was present for fan photos with Crystalyn, 5 years old, and Preslie Ewbanks, almost 1 year old, daughters of Tampa Elvis entertainer Jeremy and his wife Shelby Ewbanks. The children were wearing adorable jumpsuits created just for them, and the sisters had been pictured in brochures and advertisements for this year’s Florida State Fair.
GaryElvis entertained the crowd for round one dressed in his white with turquoise Phoenix jumpsuit, a replica of a jumpsuit that Elvis wore in concerts in 1972 and 1973. He sang “Way Down” followed by “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. His lovely wife, Chris Britt, was there cheering him on.
Elvis tribute performers who prequalified for the Elvis Extravaganza by winning previously held regional competitions performed during round two. Competitors who qualified in rounds 1 through 4 Saturday and Sunday at the Florida State Fair were as follows: Jeff LaJess, Jerome Jackson, ERock (a.k.a. Eric Haws), Billy Lindsay, GaryElvis Britt, Doug Church, Ted Torres, Jeremy Ewbanks and Steve Roberti. Despite the fact that GaryElvis was coming down with what turned out to be a 72-hour virus, he persevered and competed in the Finals. GaryElvis took the stage for the Final round in his elaborately studded and bejeweled Aloha eagle jumpsuit, a replica of one of the jumpsuits Elvis wore in 1973 and 1974. The 5,000-seat Sweetbay Entertainment Hall was packed with a very enthusiastic audience! Contest rules mandated that competitors sing the same songs they had during the open rounds, so GaryElvis once again treated the crowd to his awesome renditions of the songs “Way Down” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.
When ERock (a.k.a. Eric Haws) took the stage for his Final round, he publicly thanked GaryElvis, who he said really helped him out this weekend. He said, “GaryElvis, you’re awesome—one of the nicest ETAs I know!”
The winners of the Elvis Extravaganza are as follows: Best Overall—Vic Trevino Jr. (Texas), Best Look-Alike—tie between Brian Brenner (Ohio) and Doug Church (Michigan) and Best Sound-Alike—ERock (a.k.a. Eric Haws) (Missouri). GaryElvis was very happy for the winners and congratulated each one. He is always a gentleman and consistently goes out of his way to help the other Elvis entertainers in any way possible.
Be sure to check GaryElvis’ website Photos page or his Yahoo GaryElvis Official Fan Club website for pictures from these events.
GaryElvis placed 3rd overall in the "I'll Remember You" Elvis Tribute Contest, which was held in Live Oak, FL at the Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park January 25-26.
The Tribute to the King Contest was held in the Northern Lights Theater at the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Monday, January 7 through Thursday, January 10. Three elimination rounds were held each of the first three days, and the winners of each elimination round qualified for that evening's final. Additionally, one wild card round was held Thursday afternoon. Winners of the evening finals and the wild card round went on to compete in the big final night on Thursday. The grand prize was $25,004; the competition was intense and entertaining.
Ryan Pelton, Myrtle Beach, SC Legends in Concert performer, entertained each evening during the Tribute to the King Contest for an enthusiastic crowd in the sold-out theater. Joining Pelton on stage were Elvis' drummer D.J. Fontana and The Imperials, the Grammy Award-winning vocal group whose incredible voices backed Elvis at the Las Vegas Hilton International Hotel and on concert tours.
GaryElvis' song selections for the Monday rounds were "Hurt," "Just Pretend," "Way Down," "How Great Thou Art," "I Can't Stop Loving You," and a special tribute "Bridge Over Troubled Water" he dedicated to a special friend, Jerri Brian. GaryElvis looked terrific in his white with turquoise Phoenix jumpsuit, a replica of a jumpsuit that Elvis wore in concerts in 1972 and 1973, and even more stunning in the later rounds in his elaborately studded and bejeweled Aloha eagle jumpsuit, a replica of one of the jumpsuits Elvis wore in 1973 and 1974.
GaryElvis took the stage next on Tuesday at 4 p.m. wearing his jumpsuit du jour, a dark blue with white Phoenix jumpsuit, a replica of the Phoenix jumpsuit Elvis wore for 1972 and 1973 concerts. He sang "A Big Hunk O' Love" and "What Now My Love."
During the first round Wednesday, GaryElvis wowed the crowd when he sang a rockin' rendition of "C.C. Rider" and his fabulous signature song, "Just Pretend." He wore his white with turquoise Phoenix jumpsuit. For the second round, he performed a hip-shakin' "Burning Love" and a commanding "Bridge Over Troubled Water." When he sang "Your time has come to shine," he had me believing it was true for him! For the last round, GaryElvis wore his dark blue with white Phoenix jumpsuit and sang "Way Down" and "Just Pretend."
The three ETAs who won the evening competitions and thus pre-qualified for the Thursday night final competition were Chris Ayotte from Canton, Michigan, Ben Klein from Spokane, Washington and Dwight Icenhower from Orlando, Florida. Kevin Mills from Ontario, Canada won the wild card round Thursday afternoon, which pre-qualified him for the final round.
Dwight Icenhower won 1st place, Ben Klein 2nd place, Kevin Mills 3rd place and Chris Ayotte 4th place. A total of thirteen Elvis Tribute performers competed in 11 different rounds (truly a marathon!). Matt Joyce won the competitors’ vote for the Congeniality Elvis Award. In addition to GaryElvis and those previously mentioned the following Elvis Tribute Artists also competed: John Van Thiel, Shawn Sharp, Rick Virga, Johnny Thompson, Joseph Hall, Irv Cass and James Begley. GaryElvis was very happy for the winners and congratulated each one. He is always a gentleman and goes out of his way to help the other ETAs in any way possible.
GaryElvis extends his thanks and appreciation to the Northern Lights Theater staff. Thanks to Rachel Buelow, Entertainment Coordinator, for putting it all together. Thanks to Bob Rech, Entertainment Manager, for his role as the lighthearted master of ceremonies. Thanks to Jamie Cobb, Production Manager. Also, thanks to Richard on sound, Jackie and all of the stage crew that did a terrific job!
What better way to celebrate Elvis' Birthday, January 8, than by attending an Elvis tribute competition? Really, the effort and attention to detail by the ETAs to pay tribute to Elvis is phenomenal and is much appreciated by the Elvis/ETA fans! One of the most endearing things about GaryElvis is he will take the time to ask someone he meets in his travels, “What’s your favorite Elvis song?” Then he’ll proceed to quietly sing a verse or two, making their day a little brighter. I can imagine some of these people he comes in contact with telling their family, friends and coworkers what a tough day they had on the job, adding “but you can’t believe what happened today” and relating how GaryElvis unexpectedly made their day. It makes me think of the song we used to sing in Girl Scouts, “Make new friends, but keep the old/One is silver and the other’s gold.” We’re so thankful for the friendships we’ve made through the Elvis world and for the support and encouragement everyone shows GaryElvis. It was great to meet everyone and spend time with friends! We were already looking forward to the next competition, so it was time to pack our bags and head to Springfield, Illinois for the Midwest Tribute to the King Competition!
The 12th Annual Midwest Tribute to the King Competition was held at the Hilton Springfield in Springfield, Illinois Friday and Saturday, January 11 and 12. The competition was produced by Perfect Impressions Entertainment. Sixteen Elvis Tribute performers competed Friday and Saturday nights for over $3500 in cash prizes. Each night Irv Cass gave a special performance as Tom Jones and Kavan entertained the crowd with his Elvis tribute.
GaryElvis’ Friday night set included “Hurt,” “Promised Land” and his signature song "Just Pretend.” The audience was noticeably dazzled by his rendition of "Promised Land," and GaryElvis appeared to be enjoying himself as he interacted with audience members. He looked fantastic in his dark blue with white Phoenix jumpsuit, a replica of a jumpsuit that Elvis wore in concerts in 1972 and 1973.
Saturday night GaryElvis took the stage in his elaborately studded and bejeweled Aloha eagle jumpsuit, a replica of one of the jumpsuits Elvis wore in 1973 and 1974. He delighted the audience with "Way Down" and "Dixieland." Ladies formed lines on each side of the stage to present GaryElvis with roses and carnations.
The judges cast their votes and the following seven finalists were announced: Steve Brandis, Bill Cherry, Dwight Icenhower, Ben Klein, Jim Potter, Walt Sanders and Dave Thomas. After each of the finalists sang and a brief intermission, the following winners were announced: 1st place Ben Klein, 2nd place Bill Cherry, 3rd place Dwight Icenhower, 4th place Walt Sanders. Dwight Icenhower won Friday's People's Choice award, and Ben Klein won Saturday's People's award.
GaryElvis graciously congratulated the winners and sang during a karaoke get-together in the Rendezvous Lounge after the competition. Once again, it was great to meet everyone and spend time with friends! Thanks so much for all the support and encouragement everyone shows GaryElvis! It's much appreciated!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all
GaryElvis here in Sunny Florida,
What a wonderful year 2007 was!!!! Lots of new and exciting things happened in the Elvis Tribute Artist
world. And what about EPE crowning the "Ultimate Elvis" Champion in Shawn Klush? A better performer and
ambassador for the ETA world, you'll never find. Shawn is so phenomenal on stage. I've had the distinct
pleasure of competing among the best ETA's in the world over the past 7 years and I'm convinced that we
should all be proud to have Shawn representing us. Also, what about Ryan Pelton performing with Celine Dion
on the Elvis Tribute American Idol show back in April?? Wow!!!! That absolutely took my breath away. Again,
a better ETA to represent us would be hard if not impossible to find. Continuing on with the ABC Television
show, "The Next Best Thing". Millions of people watched as each week went by and celebrity performer after
celebrity performer was knocked off by the eventual top 3 entertainers, ETA - Donny Edwards, a Frank Sinatra
and the top winner, ETA -Trent Carlini. I personally feel humbled by Donny and Trent's success, being one of
only a small handful of ETA's to have beaten them both in tough competitions back in 2005 and 2006. And then
finally, how about the USA Today worldwide newspaper celebrating their choice of the top ETA's in the world.
Donny Edwards, Shawn Klush and Trent Carlini made the top 3, with Trent taking top honors. Although my final
order would have been different, I've got to say, the focus on Elvis Presley in 2007 and especially the focus
on the ETA World in general has NEVER BEEN GREATER!!! We can only guess what lies ahead in 2008 and beyond.
I, for one, am very excited and honored to be numbered in the ranks of those performers who strive to
perform and entertain by paying tribute to the best entertainer who ever lived, Elvis Aaron Presley.
Be sure to support your local ETA and bring non-perishable food and/or a stuffed Teddy Bear to any of their shows for them to pass along to needy families and hospitalized kids. Let them know you heard about the idea from GaryElvis and the Love Me Tender Day Charity Project. As a group, we can all make a BIG difference in our communities.
Well, take care and think about making this world a better place to live by sharing a smile and more to all those you come in contact with this Christmas season and beyond.
Love to you all from GaryElvis and Chris Britt down here near Mickey Mouse Land.
God Bless You All,
GaryElvis
www.GaryElvis.com
P.S. I hope to see you at another ETA competition and festival this year and especially in Windsor, Ontario, Canada June 26-29, where I'll perform and be the host for the 3rd straight year. Cya, GE
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!!
My Oh my oh my,
This year has completely flown by hasn't it???
Another Thanksgiving is upon us. I hope everyone will have the best ever. And for all of our loved ones going through trials and tribulations, I wish for you God's Extra care at this time.
My fantastic wife Chris and I have had a truly wonderful 2007. No, not economically, but there are more important things, as you know. I believe that when the finances are tight, you have to rely on each other more than ever and on God's love and care. That way, when things get easier, you'll REALLY appreciate them and be more considerate to others.
Well, I hope to see you at a show or competition soon.
I'll be competing at the Milwaukee, WI contest January 7, 8, 9, and 10th. Then I'll be in Springfield, IL for Fred Puglia's contest Jan 11th and 12th. Then I'll be competing in February at the Tampa, FL contest (check later for dates).
So, until we meet again..........May God Bless You All............and don't eat TOO much tomorrow and this weekend!!!!!!!
Yours always,
GaryElvis
Elvis Week 2007 in Memphis, Tennessee was phenomenal! This being the 30th Anniversary year, there was so much to do and just so much time to fit everything in.
Wednesday morning we joined our friends Bunny, Camille and Rhoda (a.k.a. the NJ gals) for breakfast at one of our favorite spots, The Kettle.
GaryElvis was interviewed and photographed Wednesday afternoon in an exclusive interview for the Palm Beach Post, a newspaper published in Palm Beach, FL. The reporter (Rachel) and cameraman (Gary) then shadowed GaryElvis for a bit, attempting to divine just what the ritual is when an Elvis entertainer prepares to take the stage to perform. Rachel and Gary were enthusiastic and duly impressed, especially when GaryElvis sang his signature song “Just Pretend” for them.
The Images of the King Contest was held Tuesday, August 14 through Sunday, August 19 at the Holiday Inn Select. This is truly an international Elvis Tribute Artist competition with competitors from Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, Japan, Sweden, and Germany, as well as from across the United States. GaryElvis performed Wednesday afternoon. He wore black pants, shirt and jacket, complimented with a shocking pink tie. Once again, he had many admiring fans lining the stage! He sang “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You,” “A Fool Such as I,” “Angel,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” and “It’s Now or Never.”
We attended Danny Dale’s luau at the Econolodge Wednesday evening, where Gary participated in karaoke. It was a relaxing time and great catching up with friends. Then it was off to downtown Memphis. We enjoyed a great rib dinner at Blues City Barbecue on Beale Street. Halfway through dinner, in came local celebrity, Ronnie McDowell. After dinner, our intention was to walk down Beale Street, but we actually didn’t get far before running into and chatting with Jesse Aron and friends from Wisconsin and Wayne Curtis and friends from New York.
After attending Images of the King on Thursday afternoon, we headed downtown to the FedEx Forum for Elvis: The 30th Anniversary Concert. This was a sold out event, amazing when you consider the FedEx Forum seats 18,500 people! Even with all those people, we met up with Shawn Klush, Dan Lentino, Ray Walker (of the Jordanaires), and Cody Slaughter and friends entering. The concert reunited Elvis via video on the big screen with many of the players and singers he worked with performing live on stage. Some of the performers included The Jordanaires, The Stamps Quartet, The Sweet Inspirations, The Imperials, Joe Guercio and Millie Kirkham. Lisa Marie was there to introduce her newly-created duet with her father, "In the Ghetto." Priscilla was also there and said a few words about how great Elvis fans are. She actually moved through about 200 of the floor seated fans to get to the stage.
Throughout Elvis Week many fans had GaryElvis sign their Images of the King programs and Erin Feinberg’s newly-released book, “King for a Day.” Feinberg’s book is a photographic study and includes many photos and quotes from ETAs that we know and love, including GaryElvis.
On Friday morning, we enjoyed breakfast with the NJ gals at the Jazz Cafe near the Econolodge. Danny Dale had karaoke set up there, and GaryElvis entertained once again.
The Images of the King winners were announced Saturday night and were as follows: 1st place—Johnny Thompson (Las Vegas, NV), 2nd place—Gino Monopoli (Toronto, ON, Canada) and 3rd place—Scott Norton (Port St. Lucie, FL). Cody Slaughter (Harrison, AR) was awarded the People’s Choice Award, and the Spirit of Elvis Award was awarded to Gene Shaw and Jerri Brian. Sadly, despite the crowd’s enthusiastic response, GaryElvis did not proceed to the finals. He congratulated all the winners.
The Images of the King Breakfast of Champions was held Sunday morning at the Holiday Inn Select. This is an opportunity for fans to hear this year’s Images of the King winner and winners from years past and to say goodbye to friends. It’s a nice finale to Elvis Week. As the Spirit of Elvis winner for 2002, GaryElvis was once again honored to give the invocation and prayer for the special gathering. Later in the program, he sang his thought-provoking original song, “Stuff Happens.” Pictures and videos from the Images of the King are available for your viewing pleasure at this link: Images of the King.
One of the highlights of my trip was when we attended a Sunday evening worship service and a very tasty potluck supper at the Crockett Church of Christ in Senatobia, MS with Bobby and Georgia Stewart and Mack and Mary Sue Gurley. GaryElvis took a turn leading the congregation in song. Many culinary delights were sampled during supper, including fried okra (a first for me). Bobby and Mack had been personal friends of Elvis’. After dinner, we went to the Stewart home for storytelling and an awesome jam session!
Overall, our Memphis trip was amazing, and we’re already looking forward to our return next year! Be sure to check out new photos posted on GaryElvis’ website, GaryElvis.com.
GaryElvis won 2nd place in the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort Elvis Tribute Artist Competition, which was held in Mt. Pleasant, MI on June 9.
This trip started off as normal. Four o'clock in the morning I am standing at my office window looking out for the red GaryElvis van to pull up for another wonderful weekend. Suddenly, a blue truck pulled into my driveway. At that hour in the morning I was reluctant to open my door. Then I saw that beautiful smile and I knew it was GaryElvis. His van had given him some minor problems so he chose to drive to the airport in Chris', his wife's truck. This did not dampen his spirits one iota. This man is the most positive man I have ever seen in my life.
We arrived at the airport and were checking our baggage. Of course there were delays due to so many people saying, "There?s Elvis." The person checking our baggage in was in awe. He asked GaryElvis to sing. Of course he did and it must have been great because this man asked GaryElvis if he would entertain the passengers as they boarded the plane. GaryElvis was happy to oblige. After his concert, Gates 33 through 39, that was waiting for their flights, applauded like thunder, stood, and gave him a standing ovation. At this time, they upgraded our seats to first class. The seats were like lounge chairs and we received the VIP treatment from our Flight Assistant. I really felt like I was with a celebrity (but then, I WAS). We were seated and as each passenger boarded, they all made a comment to him relating how much they enjoyed his performance.
He was so tired. He had been 3 days without much sleep so he slept all the way to Detroit. When we got there, we got our rental and he asked me to drive because he was still exhausted and he wanted to grab a snack on the way. I do not like to drive, especially in a strange town where I did not know where I was going. But, considering how tired he was, and he is a dear friend, I reluctantly drove 2 hours to Mt. Pleasant so he could sleep. By the way, friends, he does talk in his sleep when he is that tired. It was more interesting to listen to him than the radio so I just listened. His sense of humor is phenomenal when he is that tired. The goofy side of him comes out when he is that tired and I laughed until my sides hurt, especially over the part about "3 out of 5 every five vehicles on the highway are Dump Trucks." The drive did earn me another title to go along with Career Assistant. I am now Career Assistant/Chauffeur.
We arrived at the casino at 2:45 just in time to catch some of the Elvis/Graceland Memorabilia on display from the Honky Tonk Hall of Fame in Nashville, the hosts of the contest. Then, who but our talented ETA friend, Donny Edwards comes over to GaryElvis and they exchanged a few laffs. Then we followed Donny to the stage where he performed at 3, 5, 7, 10:30 and 11:30 that day. He is SO GOOOOD!!! GaryElvis was "worn out" so we had to miss the 2 late shows. Soon it was time to get to our rooms. The hotel was only about 2 miles down the road. After GaryElvis unloaded the bags and walked me to my room, I told him that this was a great start to the weekend. And the BEST was yet to come!!
We arrived at the Casino at l p.m. on Saturday. We met with Louie Nichols, the Uncle of one of GaryElvis' employees, John Rydel, at the Water Store in Orlando. It was John that told GE about the contest last week which gave GaryElvis just enough time to enter. Louie took us to lunch and we had a very pleasant visit with him. He had heard GaryElvis' CD's, and was to be impressed even more when he later saw him perform live.
Some of the contestants began showing up: Steven Hunt and Darrin Hagel, former Collingwood Champion in '04, who spent a lot of time sharing old times with GaryElvis and Matt King, also a Collingwood past Champion, who also arrived early. Soon, Detroit performer Fred Wolfe and Don "Tulsa" McLean arrived. There were 5 others that I didn't recognize.
Time came for the contest. They chose numbers for the contestants and GaryElvis was selected #5. He hurriedly left for the hotel to get ready. This meant I had to wait through 4 contestants until I could breath again. He came out and I left my seat and stood in the middle of the crowd. The promoter, Steve, announced the great backup band members and that they had separately earned 6 Grammies between them with their separate bands in Nashville!! GaryElvis arrived and had on his Turquoise Phoenix and the suit only exaggerates his beautiful eyes. He sang, "You Gave Me A Mountain." I have never heard him sing it better, and as my son would say, "He owns that song." The cheers, applause, and whistles were deafening. The girls were screaming but it was time for him to leave the stage, so he tossed 5 scarves near a group of women who all scrambled to get a treasure. One man in a wheelchair asked me if I was a friend of his and I said, "Yes." He said, "He is really good!" Another lady came up and asked me where she could vote for him. Much to my dismay I had to tell her the judges did the voting. One by one the other performers came and performed. Too soon, however, the show was over and when they approached the platform to announce the winners, I became breathless again. I KNEW he was first place, always is in my opinion. They announced Michigan local Fred Wolf, who sang "Burnin Love" in his black leather as 3rd place, GaryElvis as 2nd, and Michigan local Matt King, who sang "Unchained Melody" while accompanying himself on the keyboard, as first. When GaryElvis went to congratulate Matt King, Matt reminded his old buddy that GE had whipped him in Milwaukee this past January so they were even!! The people kept GaryElvis for pictures and autographs, even several from Matt's Fan Club. Everywhere we go, people just adore him.
We were so excited so we stayed for Donny Edwards' show. It was so much fun when the boys discussed the times they beat each other in competition. Donny and Gary talked Elvis and Elvis Tribute Artists and you could see the sparkle in both of their eyes. Donny is an awesome performer. If he is ever in your area, please go and see him.
Sunday morning we were headed for the airport. I didn't have to drive this time!!! We turned in the car in the parking lot and he sang for the car rental staff. We left the car and got to the shuttle, he sang to the people in the shuttle. They were closing the shuttle doors and a girl came and stuck her head in the door and requested "Jailhouse Rock." He was requested to sing again at the security check. From the time we turned in the car until we got to the boarding gate, he had completed an entire concert. But then, this is what he does best and loves it.
While waiting for our flight, a little girl came up with her daddy and asked GaryElvis for his autograph. She asked him to sign her autograph book to "Amanda and Amber, please." After he signed her little autograph book she just stood and looked at him for a while. I could not hear their conversation but I did see her big smile when he talked to her.
We boarded the plane and were now on our way home. Another very successful and exciting trip with GaryElvis. He was so tired from a joyous weekend of greeting old friends and meeting new that he fell asleep like a baby and slept all the way home.
Our next trip is coming up June 28th, 29th, 30th, and July 1st in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, where he is host and MC for the great Windsor Elvis Fest. Please come and join us and help us make more memories.
Luv ya all,

GaryElvis won 2nd place in the Follow Your Dream to Charlotte competition, which was held in Charlotte, NC April 13 and 14.
Our trip to Charlotte North Carolina started out with excited anticipation and both of our spirits were high looking forward to a wonderful time.
After our 10 hour drive from Tampa, that flew by, we arrived at the Moose Lodge at 4:30PM on Friday. The meeting for the ETA’s was to be held at 5:00PM. The contest started at 7:00PM. GE picked #11, but we still had no time to obtain our rooms prior to the contest. Surely any local hotel would have at least 2 vacant rooms (or so we thought....more later....)
The first night was so very exhilarating. Each contestant came to the platform and sang their hearts out. The part I really enjoyed was getting to meet new artists I had never met before. The people in North Carolina just welcomed us with open arms and I felt right at home. Many thanks to Roger Bennett, Sr. for his great coordinating of this event. Linda "Juicy" and Gene Duvernell had a vendor's table next to me and "Juicy" is just a doll. Also, the guys were just great to me. Several would come by and sing to me personally! What a treat that was. GaryElvis was able to refuel past friendships with his great friends Mark Gagnon, Marc Woodward & Matt Spaulding as well as meeting new friends in all of the Charlotte ETA's.
The contest was over for the first night and GaryElvis and I set out to find rooms. Little did we know that there were several events going on in Charlotte and the towns hotels were sold out. We went from hotel to hotel only to be turned away. Eventually, Gary was able to secure 2 rooms over his cell phone by calling several toll-free reservation lines. However, the reservations were in what was supposedly the more dangerous inner city. So, we made one final attempt at the Day’s Inn 15 miles north of Charlotte. GaryElvis went into the lobby and did not return for an hour!! I got concerned, so I went to find him. He was talking to the clerk. I knew then he was okay. He came back to the van so excited that he was speaking so fast I could hardly understand. He had met Herman Lawson – a former football player at Auburn University in GaryElvis' home state of Alabama. As it turns out, Herman and Gary each shared the same coach, Wayne Hall, although they attended different schools 15 years apart!!! And Herman has a 4 year old son, Jaylen. This is why during the day, Herman is a school teacher and at night manages a very busy Days Inn. Although it was a very pleasant visit, it was way-y-y-y past midnight and we resolved to go to take the reservations downtown. After another 45 minutes, at 3:30AM we finally arrived at the Days Inn hotel near the heart of the city and we were able to turn in for the night.
Saturday night came and the excitement turned into apprehension. Each contestant came out and knew this was it, since the two performances would be added together and the top 3 would be announced. The talent was remarkable. Finally, after each contestant had performed, it was time for the judging. While the judges were determining the winners, Tom Bartlett and his band performed. This was worth going the entire trip to hear this performance. The scores were tallied and the results were in. They announced the third place winner, Charlotte's own Chuck Ayers, then (it seemed like ages) they announced GARYELVIS as second place winner, and Charlotte's own Adam Fisher as first place winner. I screamed until I almost lost my voice. I am always so proud of him and love to see him happy and he was so very happy (a little surprised, but happy nonetheless).
We went back to our rooms that night with relief and delight. We decided to have a victory dinner which consisted of KFC left over chicken, left over chicken salad, Cheeto’s, Ginger cookies, and cokes. It was so nice. On the TV was the 1941 movie, Pot O Gold, starring a very young Jimmy Stewart and Paulette Goddard. After the surprisingly good meal, GE ushered me to my room. It was a wonderful evening and the end to a very good day.
Sunday morning we went to breakfast and then started home. He was so happy he sang the entire way home, much to my delight.
While stopping to get gas along the way, GE saw three young men standing in front of a GreyHound Bus. He thought of the times he had to travel on GreyHound buses to get to his competitions. He is very sentimental. He stopped and gave one young man a CD. Another man standing there wanted one too, but GE graciously had to decline. After saying goodbye, we drove away. No sooner had we driven about 1/4 mile when GE turned around and headed back to the GreyHound. He found the 2nd and 3rd young men and gave each a new CD. I had to get him away from there before he depleted the entire stock of CD’s. He has a heart of gold and does not know when to stop.
GaryElvis decided during this road trip to create a new Greatest Hits 2007 CD with familiar titles redone. This new CD will feature his 2 new exciting originals, "Workin’ and Lovin’ "and "Stuff Happens". Also, each CD will have an unannounced bonus song. A portion of the proceeds from this new CD will to go the Love Me Tender Day Charity Project.

GaryElvis won 3rd place in The 30th Anniversary "Frankfort Special" Bluegrass Tribute to the King Contest, which was held in Frankfort, KY March 9 and 10.
It was Friday, February 23rd, and I was on the road again. Only this time I was driving alone. I was not used to this. I had an hour and a half drive to the EP Continental Festival in Orlando. I had waited for this weekend forever. The traffic was horrible due to construction, and I missed my exit. After much panic I finally arrived at the Radisson Hotel and was really excited to start my first weekend out in six months.
I got there at 4 p.m. and started getting ready for the evening of karaoke with the top ETA vocalists. This was a show that kept you on the edge of your seat waiting to see who the next vocalist was going to be. There were vocalists like Dwight Icenhower, Ted Torres, Peter Alden, and, of course, GaryElvis. Each artist would sing their set, and then you had the opportunity to bid $5.00 to dance with the artist. After GaryElvis' set, I was the first to bid before the music even stopped. I wanted the first dance. There were others waiting in the wings to dance with him. After all of the artists had done their sets, it was time for the last song for the night, “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You." Everyone started getting ready to leave for the hospitality suite for more singing and fun. Just then, Karen began begging the crowd to help make up at least $55 more to reach their dance goal of $300. GaryElvis noticed Arelia Sayer, Jim Shirah's sister and great friend to all the ETAs, wasn't dancing, and so he asked her. They danced and talked about the great festival. She said, “Gary, you don’t dance." He said, "Let's help Karen raise the $300!” To help the EP Continentals, he was willing to pay the $5.00. Soon, Karen announced, "We've just made our goal. Thanks everyone for contributing!"
After the karaoke, we all went to the hospitality room. The guys all sang, and we ate, and ate, and ate. To me, I sat there listening to the greatest voices in the business and that was enough for me. They closed the hospitality room at midnight but the party was not over. It would not be for Elvis if he were there, so these guys follow in the same tradition. They just love to sing. We went to Scott and Janet Norten’s room for more singing. These ETAs get together just to sing with each other. It was around 4:30 a.m. when they decided to get some sleep. GaryElvis had gone home around 2:00 a.m. He had a long drive back to Plant City, Florida.
GaryElvis could not be there Saturday. He had a previous engagement to attend in Port Canaveral, so I spent the day in the vendors room. They had all of the artists, once again, singing. I did not do much purchasing. I chose to listen to the music. Then it came time to get dressed for the dinner and show. It was the highlight of the weekend. The dinner was awesome, and I got to dress up. The show was “Tickle Me” starring Vince Anthony. It was so very cute and what a production. After Tickle Me, was Peter Alden. If you ever get a chance you have to see this artist perform. I sat there the entire evening just waiting for the next song. The finale was breathtaking. Everyone left in tears. After the show, the party all started again in the hospitality room.
Sunday, the last day, I went to the gospel service by David King. It was so inspirational. I felt I had been in church. After the service, everyone gathered for the car show and the last minute shopping with the vendors. Of course, I was sitting in the front row waiting to hear the ETAs. GaryElvis was still in Port Canaveral. By this time, GaryElvis friends and fans had started asking me, “Where is GaryElvis? When will he be here?” I called his cell, and he was on his way from Port Canaveral to Orlando. When he finally got there and walked in, they all started cheering. He sang “Workin and Lovin'" and "Stuff Happens,” along with other songs. These are two songs he wrote, and they went over great. After the karaoke, we went to the hospitality room to eat again. While we were there, they came and got GaryElvis to help break down the set. It was getting late, and I did not want to drive home by myself in the dark, so I went to the set to tell GaryElvis goodbye and drove home. It was a nice drive home because I just relived my weekend. It was unusual and different from most of our out of town trips with GaryElvis but so very relaxing and enjoyable.
If you live in the Orlando area and are not a member of the EP Continental Fan Club, you do not know what you are missing. This is the warmest club I have ever seen. They are so full of the Elvis love. They go out of their way to be nice to you. I love every one of them.
Don’t forget March 9th and 10th in Frankfort, KY. GaryElvis would love to CYA there.
Luv ya,
Patti Perkins
GaryElvis placed 4th overall in the Tribute to the King Contest, which was held in Milwaukee, WI at the Potawatomi Casino January 5-8. Trip report follows.
The Tribute to the King Contest was held in the Northern Lights Theater at the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Friday, January 5 through Monday, January 8. Three elimination rounds were held each of the first three days, and the winners of each elimination round qualified for that evening's final. Additionally, one wild card round was held Monday afternoon. Winners of the evening finals and the wild card round went on to compete in the big final night on Monday.
Ryan Pelton, Myrtle Beach, SC Legends in Concert performer, entertained each evening during the Tribute to the King Contest for an enthusiastic crowd in the sold-out theater.
GaryElvis' song selections for the Friday rounds included "Way Down," "Unchained Melody," a song he wrote called "Workin' & Lovin,'" "God Bless the USA," "See See Rider" and "He Touched Me." He looked amazing throughout in his Phoenix jumpsuit, a replica of a jumpsuit that Elvis wore in concerts in 1972 and 1973.
For the first round at noon on Saturday, GaryElvis appeared onstage looking fantastic in his jumpsuit du jour, a replica of the Black Conquistador jumpsuit Elvis wore in his November 1972 concerts. GaryElvis' wisely chose "Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Just Pretend," the latter one of my absolute favorites! Well, the crowd and judges were duly impressed! GaryElvis won the round, and it was time for him to plan for the evening round, but not before circulating throughout the theater to thank those in attendance for being there. Tony Rocker won the 2:00 round, and Jesse Aron won the 4:00 round. For Saturday evening's performance, GaryElvis rocked the house with "Burnin' Love" and was awesome again as he sang "Just Pretend." While Ryan Pelton was performing his first set, the judges tallied the scores for the Saturday evening final competition. Finally, it was time for the results! Drumroll…GaryElvis won! Jesse Aron came in second, with Tony Rocker in third.
The three ETAs qualified for the Monday night final competition were GaryElvis, Chris Ayotte from Canton, Michigan and Ben Klein from Spokane, Washington. The three finalists made a live appearance Monday morning on Milwaukee's Fox 6 WakeUp News.
Donny Edwards from Las Vegas, Nevada won the wild card round Monday afternoon, which qualified him for the final round. The tension seemed to build throughout the day. On Monday evening for the competition, GaryElvis wore the Black Conquistador jumpsuit and performed magnificently throughout "A Big Hunk O' Love" and "Just Pretend." Donny Edwards won 1st place, with Ben Klein in 2nd, Chris Ayotte in 3rd and GaryElvis in 4th. There were nearly 20 ETAs competing, provided my notes served me well through 14 different competitions (really a marathon!). Out of nearly 20 ETAs, 4th place is certainly admirable and a reason to celebrate! GaryElvis was very happy for the other winners and congratulated each one. He is always a gentleman and goes out of his way to help the other ETAs in any way possible.
GaryElvis said that it was good to see old friends. Steve and Dee Kerchoff from Janesville, WI said GaryElvis did a fantastic job and the manner in which he conducted himself the whole 4 days was refreshing as well as a beautiful tribute to Elvis in itself. Sherry Nagel from Milwaukee, WI enjoyed GaryElvis’ performances and was disappointed when he didn’t get 1st place. LaDawn Lemerond said that she attended the competition every day and night along with me, and as she said we surely had a good time! LaDawn also said that GaryElvis surely came through with “Just Pretend” and a few other great choices he sang. Holly Green from Beloit, WI said it was good to see GaryElvis again, too, and that his performance was super.
What better way to celebrate Elvis' Birthday, January 8, than by attending an ETA competition? Really, the effort and attention to detail by the artists to pay tribute to Elvis is phenomenal and is much appreciated by the Elvis/ETA fans! It was great to meet everyone and spend time with friends! Already looking forward to the next time!
The Parade of Kings was held at the Menominee Casino in Keshena, Wisconsin Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9. The competition was produced by Kurt Brown of Brown Productions and was a bit different than most competitions. Each of the seven competing ETAs performed for 30 minutes each on both Friday and Saturday nights, and the top three places were awarded for each night. Paco Danesi and the Casino Brothers Band provided great backup for all the guys. In addition to GaryElvis, the competitors were Jesse Aron, Aaron Moriarity and John VanThiel from Wisconsin, Wayne Curtis from New York, Anthony Von and Mike Calamusa from Toronto, Ontario.
We arrived Thursday evening to chilly Wisconsin winter weather, temps in the single digits. GaryElvis and Wayne Curtis shared performing “Way Down” that evening to whet the crowd’s appetite for the upcoming entertainment.
GaryElvis’ Friday night set included an awesome 70’s set that featured “Big Hunk O’ Love,” “Burnin’ Love” and “That’s All Right Mama,” a song he wrote called “Workin’ & Lovin’,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Polk Salad Annie,” “Hurt,” and “I Can’t Help Falling in Love.” He looked stunning in a Blue Rainfall jumpsuit, a replica of a jumpsuit that Elvis wore in concerts from 1973 to 1977.
GaryElvis’ Saturday night set was totally exciting, especially with three changes of clothes that authentically represented the successive eras of Elvis’ music. For the 50’s set, he wore black slacks, black shirt, black velvet jacket and skinny white tie. For the movie years, he wore white slacks and a Hawaiian shirt with lei. And for the later years, he wore the elaborately studded Aloha eagle jumpsuit, a replica of the Aloha eagle Elvis wore in 1973 and 1974. The set included “That’s All Right Mama,” “Baby Let’s Play House,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Rock-a-hula Baby,” “Blue Hawaii,” “See See Rider,” “All Shook Up,” “Fever,” and “American Trilogy.” The ladies in the audience were going wild!
Anthony Von won 1st place Friday night, with John VanThiel in second, and Mike Calamusa in third. Jesse Aron won 1st place Saturday night, with Mike Calamusa coming in second, and John VanThiel in third. Sadly, the judges didn’t give our GaryElvis the marks we know he deserves. He really did look super, sound great, and certainly wowed the crowd! GaryElvis was very happy for the winners and congratulated each one.
Overall, it was a great time and so nice to see the camaraderie between the guys with a shared passion for paying tribute to Elvis Presley. I enjoyed meeting everyone and catching up with others I’d met before. Thanks to LaDawn for providing transportation for us to and from Green Bay airport! Thanks also to LaDawn, Patsy and Holly for the great munchies, especially the squeaky cheese (cheese curds…a first)!

I want everyone to join me in wishing my long-time wonderful friend, Patti Perkins, all the best. After much difficult deliberation, she has decided to step back and, although painfully for sure, she will not be participating in our shows and travels anywhere near to the extent she has been over the last 4 years. She has been such a great source of strength and joy, it will be painful on our side, too! But we wish her the best and always will have her happiness and best wishes at heart. I suggest you re-read the RoadTrips section of the Archives at my website to relive many of the wonderful times we have enjoyed together during the past several years. Her sons Daryn, Dennis and Davey are great guys and she'll be able to spend much more time with them and in their lives, as well as their families' lives, with this adjustment. PATTI, WE ALL LOVE YOU AND WILL MISS YOU TERRIBLY.
Visiting Memphis for the first time during Elvis Week 2006 and attending the Images of the King Contest is a dream come true for any diehard Elvis/Elvis Tribute Artist fan. Where else can you experience nine days of Elvis 24/7? Well, let me tell you that it was spectacular!
Graceland is the ultimate in 70s cool, and the TLC that is lavished on it is obvious. The candlelight vigil at Graceland is a solemn remembrance that begins at 9 p.m. on the anniversary of Elvis’ death. The line of visitors still extended down Graceland’s driveway from our arrival at 1:30 a.m. until after our 2:30 a.m. departure.
The Images of the King Contest was held Tuesday, August 15 through Sunday, August 20. This is truly an international Elvis Tribute Artist competition with competitors from Canada, Belgium, Norway, England, the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, the Philippines, and Israel, as well as from across the United States. GaryElvis performed Thursday, August 17th. He looked fabulous in his black Conquistador jumpsuit, and sounded as good as ever! Well, he had many admiring fans lining the stage! The finalists were announced, and GaryElvis was among the names announced. Yea! Out of 100+ ETAs, GaryElvis was chosen as a finalist. Numbers were drawn to determine when the ETAs would perform, and GaryElvis would be competing Friday night in round one of the finals. GaryElvis performed Friday night wearing the black Conquistador. Does he realize how handsome he is in that jumpsuit? Again, he sounded fantastic! The winners were announced Saturday night and were as follows: 1st place--Elvis Jr. (Franz Goovaerts of Belgium), 2nd place—Gino Monopoli (Canada) and 3rd place—Kjell Bjornestad (Norway). Jeff Barnes (Georgia) was awarded the People’s Choice Award, and Pearl Mauck was awarded the Spirit of Elvis Award. GaryElvis was one of the key players at the Breakfast of Champions held Sunday, August 20, as he was the recipient of the Spirit of Elvis Award in 2001 in Memphis. He also was honored to give the invocation and prayer for the special gathering. Those in attendance at the breakfast were treated to a duet by GaryElvis and his good friend, Franz Goovaerts, Elvis Jr., this year’s Images of the King winner. Franz requested GaryElvis sing “Memories” with him “like we did in Lake George,” he told the audience. Pictures and videos from the Images of the King are available for your viewing pleasure at this link: Images of the King.
One of the highlights of my trip was to Holly Springs, MS and Tupelo, MS with GaryElvis and Patti Perkins. Graceland Too in Holly Springs is Paul McLeod’s eclectic 50-year collection of Elvis memorabilia. More information at this link: Graceland Too. When we set out that day, Tupelo wasn’t on our agenda, but one wrong turn on the highway, and it was as though it was meant to be. We visited Elvis’ birthplace in Tupelo, which was extra special because I wasn’t sure if I’d get the time to travel there, with everything that I wanted to do in Memphis and only so many days in town. Seeing the contrast between Elvis’ original home and Graceland and Graceland Too all in the same trip was rather thought-provoking.
All in all, Memphis was awesome, and the plans are already in the works for next year’s return!

I know it sounds redundant when I say this was the best yet. It is true. Each trip just keeps getting better and better. This was my first solo trip without GaryElvis. He had so many administrative duties to perform Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Windsor, so I flew up alone on Thursday to join him.
GaryElvis had made all of the plans. My youngest son, Daryn, and his wife, Alina, took me to the airport. It was strange. The entire flight was so uneventful. No one noticed me at all. I was used to people stopping us and begging GaryElvis to sing or just talk to them. No one abducted ME and took ME to the pilot. No excitement. I missed him already.
However, when I got to the airport I was picked up by Bill and Bonnie Trombley. That is when the fun began. They are so wonderful. They are just like family to us. We stopped off at Bill and Bonnie’s pastor's house, and it was great. They served stuffed shells and other side dishes. I have never eaten stuffed shells that were so good. The company was wonderful. I was treated like they had known me forever, not like this was the first time I'd visited their home.
Bill then called GaryElvis to let him know I had arrived safely. GaryElvis was in a television interview. I did not see GaryElvis until the shows Thursday night. These two shows were in the Casino Windsor. Irv Cass opened the first and second shows with GaryElvis closing them. The first show at 8 p.m., Irv came out in the Viva Las Vegas yellow half blazer. At 10, Irv came out in the dazzling blue swirl jumpsuit. At 8:25 & 10:25, GaryElvis appeared in the stunning blue fringe jumpsuit. The people in the casino went crazy but then you had two of the classiest ETA’s performing. There were more people gathering around the stage than there were at the machines gambling. Again, Bill and Bonnie took us back to the hotel. This couple took us under their wing and wherever we needed to go, they were right there. I only wish that a giving couple like this comes into your life.
Friday morning GaryElvis called me and he had another interview and wanted to know if I wanted to go. I told him yes but I wasn’t dressed yet. He said, “shucks” in that southern style. GaryElvis had to rehearse the entire day at the Chrysler Theater, so Bill and Bonnie babysat me again. We went to the beautiful Dieppe Park to hear the ETA’s that were going to be in the competition. It was so much fun hearing all of the talent. Finally it was 8 p.m. and time for the show. I had a front row seat. GaryElvis came out and gave me that certain wink. He knew I had a wonderful day even though he had to work all day. This was a more than spectacular show. It featured GaryElvis, host and headliner, Irv Cass, headliner, and Pete Paquette, headliner. Pete did the 50’s, Irv did the black leather and 70's Elvis, and GaryElvis took your breath away in the various combinations of the movies Elvis (black Velvet) and the exciting Blue Fringe.
Saturday morning was so thrilling. GaryElvis was in the car parade. He was sitting on the top of the back seat of a golden 1974 Cadillac Brougham. It was gorgeous. It was owned by Vince and Cindy and we struck up a friendship that I hope goes on forever. They made the parade even more fun. I had the honor of sitting in the back seat. It really was a hair raising event. After the parade, GaryElvis had to go to the park and emcee the preliminary contest for the ETA’s that were competing. He was also interviewed here by the local television station as well as their radio station. It was a beautiful sunny day. Too beautiful. I got SUNBURNED. It was so bad my clothes were sticking to me. GaryElvis got one of the most precious volunteers, Jude, to take me to the hotel, wait on me to shower and change and take me back. I am telling you, we were treated like royalty. Saturday night was the finals. That is always breathtaking. There were four categories: Youth - winner Brycen Katolinsky, Non-Pros Early Years - winner Lance Dobinson, Non-Pros Vegas Years - winner David Muggeridge and Pros, All Eras - winner Jesse Aron.
After the competition, there was a real live wedding. GaryElvis sang "Can't Help Falling In Love," "Big Hunka Love" and “And I Love You So." Ordained Minister Greg Jacqua (Jake-Way) married Ian Hibbert and Lisa Lissard at the beginning of the second half. They were joined on stage by their wedding party and the ElvisFest Finalists.
I always knew GaryElvis was a superior singer with a four octave range. His rendition of "It's Now Or Never," complete with entrance Italian phrasing, was spectacular. However, he also is an exceptional emcee, too. He was so comfortable teasing with the audience and getting audience responses. If you were not there, ask GaryElvis about the Duck Joke. Sunday, a special fan gave him a darling yellow duck purse. After the wonderful show, Bill and Bonnie Trombley were our escorts again, and we treated them to coffee and Danish.
Sunday was the Gospel sing and I dearly loved it. I missed my church, but these guys were a great substitute. After the Gospel Sing we all went out to eat. There was Roy and Basia LeBlanc, Richard and Sandy Rosenthal and her delightful Mom, Dottie, David and Phyllis Muggeridge (overall point winner, Gospel winner and Non-Pro Vegas years winner), Moira Stephens (GaryElvis' webmaster), Pete Paquette and beautiful girlfriend, Heather, myself and GaryElvis. This is always a great time when everyone winds down and especially when you KNOW it was a huge success.
After the dinner, since GaryElvis and I did not have to leave until Monday, we were invited to visit the home of Sandy and Richard Rosenthal. Theirs' is such a warm home, and I was made to feel so at ease. I took my shoes and jewelry off, and the women went into the den and laughed, joked and had the time of our life. While we were relaxing and just plain acting like teenagers giggling, GaryElvis and Richard (still excited over the huge success and I think kind of proud of themselves) could be heard in the living room already planning next years' Windsor 2nd Annual ElvisFest.
This is one event we are so very honored to be a part of. GaryElvis loves to perform for the audience, and just as much loves to help coordinate the evening's entertainment while performing. It's certainly not an easy job to stay focused, but he pulled it off supremely well. I was so proud of him. We hope you all can join us in Windsor, Ontario next year.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers and word of inspiration for my mom. She is doing much better now, and I am taking her to the beach this coming week.
Until we are “On the Road Again”

GaryElvis and I left Tampa at 4:30 p.m. We got to the airport on time but that was the only thing that was normal about our trip to Lake George. We checked in thinking we would be boarding soon. No, that did not happen. We had a two hour wait due to bad weather. GaryElvis made good use of that time by preparing his music lists for his sets.
Finally we were in the air headed for Washington, DC. We were sure we would have a great flight from there on in. WRONG. We had another layover. This one was for only 90 minutes.
We finally arrived in Albany, New York at around 12:30 a.m. and got our luggage (sort of) and headed for Lake George. GaryElvis' costume bag was among the missing. He filed a missing luggage claim and we prayed. He really needed his costumes. The trip from the airport is about an hour drive to Lake George. By this time it was very late. We got to Lake George around 1:30 a.m. None of this dampened GaryElvis' spirits one bit. He decided, even at this hour, to place his photo magnets on the vehicle so everyone in Lake George would know that he had arrived. Even though Lake George was asleep at that time, several well known ETA'S were still out scouting the city looking for their friends. It was so great when the guys pulled into the parking lot and screamed G-A-R-Y-E-L-V-I-S. It made me feel like I was in the parking lot of Mel's Diner on Happy Days. The fun began at that time. Needless to say, it was early in the morning before we got any rest. But the rooms were nice and there was the owner, Denny, at the office when we arrived at the Motel Montreal.
Friday was the beginning of a very exciting competition. After registering at the Lake George Forum and discovering that GaryElvis had been accidentally left out of the souvenir program, we left and arrived at the Beach Road tent at 12:00 p.m. GaryElvis was so very handsome in his black concho jumpsuit. I just love him in black. His luggage still had not been located. It was cold and rainy but when GaryElvis appeared on the stage with such confidence and the infamous slow smile the tent totally warmed up. He sang "I Got a Woman/Amen" and "Just Pretend." The competition went on all day and night there. Around 11 it was time to turn in. Too bad the weather turned cold and rainy.
The next morning, it was raining cats and dogs, but GaryElvis had made his mind up to show his support for the scheduled Elvis Classic Antique Car Parade at 8 a.m. We arrived on time, and we were the only ones to stay until there wasn't anyone left. Bill & Bonnie Trombley, the director of the parade and his wife, gave their heartfelt thanks for the effort.
Before the competition on Saturday afternoon, he was scheduled to perform at DJ's Bar and Grill. This was so much fun. He had the entire place rocking. Everyone was singing with him and he won so many friends that several followed him from that performance throughout the rest of the weekend. A group of girls wanted to be his backup singers so instead of being the Sweet Inspirations, they called themselves the Hot Tomatoes. One of the highlights of that performance was when GaryElvis and Elvis Jr., from Belgium, did a couple of duets. They did a beautiful rendition of Memories and traded singing harmony. The one I really loved was TROUBLE. Not only the magnitude of their voices but the acting ability among these two talented men. They each took fighting stances and menacingly glared at each other, while singing mind you, as if they were about to strangle and punch each other. If I did not know both of them better I would have believed their performance and thought they actually were going to get physical. You should have been there. The crowd loved it and Tammy, Elvis Jr.'s friend gave us a copy of the performances.
One of our annual events that we look forward to so very much is meeting with our friends Allison, Linda, Mike, DeLinda, Kevin Kupcha and his sister Beth at the Mt. Prospect Diner and just relaxing, eating, and the greatest ETAs singing your favorite Elvis songs (Kevin, Kavan, Alison, etc.).
My favorite time is when GaryElvis and I get to spend some time just enjoying the view of this beautiful God-given country. The Adirondack Mountains come down and meet the beautiful Lake George waters. There is a lane that goes between the mountains and the crystal lake. GaryElvis drove down that beautiful lane and it was so peaceful. The scenery was more majestic that I can describe. We then went to the Boardwalk Restaurant for dinner, after GaryElvis stopped a motorcyclist at a gas station and asked him for his favorite restaurant. There was just the two of us and I thought we would have an opportunity to talk. WRONG. We walked in and, of course, he was recognized. Folk Singer extraordinaire, Juan Ortiz, was singing music from the 70's and GaryElvis just loved it. The singer then took a break and brought his son over to meet GaryElvis. I wish you could have seen the look in his eyes and the smile on his face. GaryElvis did it again. He made another little boy happy. After dinner, we went to catch Shawn Klush at the Lake George Forum. He and Ryan Pelton are my favorite ETA's, after GaryElvis, of course! The show was wonderful. The ExSpence Account Show Band out of Chicago was there along with Dan Lentino on guitar and Myrna Smith of the Sweet Inspirations adding vocals. After the show, GaryElvis got to spend a little time with his friend Shawn. We took some pictures together. It was then, close up, when we could see the bruises and cuts on Shawn's face from the motorcycle accident he had just gotten over from only 2 weeks ago. He is a consumate performer.
Sunday was the culmination of the competition. This time wasn't to be for GaryElvis to join his friends in the finals, however, he saw a man, Ron Rice, in a wheelchair. The day before, he had met him and spent some special time with him at the Beach Road tent. GaryElvis had Ron drive and park his wheelchair directly in front of him so he could spend a little time with him. As Ron would so often slip down in his wheelchair, GaryElvis would pull him up by his elbows. It touched my heart to see this man in the wheelchair sitting in front of GaryElvis. He would turn around and try to get GaryElvis to sing with him, which he did many times during the day. GaryElvis brought this man's inner spirit out and made his day. Ron knew all of the words to the Elvis songs even though it was difficult to understand the words. This is another reason my heart is full of love for the man - GaryElvis - not just the voice.
After the finals, our very precious friends, Bill and Bonnie Tromley, took us to dinner at Sweet Bays. There is nothing like sitting down to a great dinner and just enjoying time with friends like these two. We got so involved in enjoying just being together and making up for lost time that time got away. Before we knew it, we were the only people left in the restaurant. We are so blessed to have friends like these two.
It was now Monday morning and time to return home. It was bittersweet. I had such a wonderful time. I did not want it to end, but he had to get home and get ready for the Windsor Elvisfest. Don't forget, that is June 30, July 1st & July 2nd. I need you all to be there to help GaryElvis. He is the host and one of the headliners of this event. For info: www.WindsorElvisFest.com.
We got on the airplane, and I headed for my seat. I noticed a commotion behind me, and then I realized GaryElvis had been abducted. He was ushered into the cockpit with the pilots. The flight attendant had recognized him and had taken him away. I found my seat, and eventually they returned him to me. As usual, he got silly and we giggled all the way home on the flight.
I have to tell you, this is the greatest guy in the world to work with. He is not only talented but also has a heart of gold. I came home and my mother was very sick. She has congestive heart failure, kidney failure, has had 3 heart attacks, and now is diagnosed with pneumonia. He has held my hand throughout all of this, and he and Chris have been praying for her and for me. This is the reason I need for you all to be there to help him in Windsor in case I do not get to go.
We love you all,
Patti

I met GaryElvis at 4:30 a.m. at Signs Now. We were both looking forward to the weekend to come. We boarded the white GaryElvis van and we were on our way. We got to the airport and checked our baggage. The flight was delayed and delayed and delayed so finally GaryElvis decided to go to the men's room to freshen up. At that moment they announced the flight was boarding and in order to expedite the boarding they were having two lines. I knew then I had to get GaryElvis in a hurry. I ran to the men's room and sent a stranger in to tell GaryElvis the flight was boarding. I ran back to the boarding area in order to hold our flight. We did make it on time. A trip with GaryElvis is always exciting. We were on our way to Augusta.
We got to Augusta around 11 a.m. and went to the VFW. This is where the competition was to be held. We found out the drawing for places was to be at 12:30 p.m. After GaryElvis drew 3rd place, we went back to the hotel to dress.
The competition started. The stage was 12' x 12' square. The guys had to work all four angles. They did not know where the judges were sitting. It was interesting. The spotlights were all around the edge of the stage. Each contestant poured his heart out in song and movements. Some of those in attendance included GaryElvis' good friends Mark Gagnon, Arik Christopher, Damon Hendrix, Rick Wade, Alvin Smith, Matt Spalding, Paul Knudson and little Elvii, Alex Swindle and Demi Downing. After the last contestant sang, they chose the finalists. I am proud to say that GaryElvis was a finalist.
Saturday night the finalists were all set to give it their best. They did and finally the announcement was made (1st place--Damon Hendrix, 2nd place--Adam Fisher, 3rd place--Arik Christopher, 4th place--Rick Wade, 5th place--Jeff Barnes). GaryElvis apologized for not placing in the top 5, however, each of the top five finalists had a number of audience members that were very persuasive to the judges. In any case, I thought his performance was the best of them all! By this time, it was 3AM so we went back to the hotel to retire for the night.
Sunday morning...GaryElvis always does something very special on our trips. This was the best part of the trip for me. We went to the movies and saw "The Pink Panther." I had never seen any Pink Panther movies. I laughed so hard, and so did he. We had a huge box of popcorn and believe me, between both of us we devoured the popcorn. It was so great hearing the little children in the movie laughing too.
We finally got to the Augusta airport to go home. Again, there were long delays. All of the flights coming in from Atlanta were delayed due to bad weather. When we boarded there were only four of us on this small airplane. Then the pilot requested all four of us to sit in the middle of the airplane to balance the load. I was not comfortable with this. It felt like the "Twilight Zone." We even had to board the plane through the back door. Needless to say, I was relieved to get to Atlanta.
However, while waiting for our flight in the Atlanta airport sirens started going off and the lights started flashing. Then the announcement "MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE--AN EMERGENCY HAS BEEN REPORTED IN THE BUILDING--PLEASE STAND BY FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS." This went on for about 10 minutes. I was scared. Atlanta is a huge airport, and you all know what I was thinking. I never found out what the emergency was, but I was happy when we boarded and was on our way home. We arrived in Tampa around 1:00 a.m., and I must say it was another wonderful trip.
His next trip is to Minneapolis, MN at the Mall of America on March 31st--April 1. Make your plans to meet him there.
Luv ya all,
Patti
